CLEVELAND — The University of Toledo came up just short of the finish line in Ginny Boggess’ debut season.
The No. 2 seed Rockets had a malfunction at the most inopportune time on Saturday, failing to get the ball in the basket or drawing up a plan to stop Alex Richard of top-seeded Ball State.
The 6-foot-1 all-conference forward scored a game-high 28 points — including 14 in the fourth quarter — to lead the Cardinals to a 65-58 victory in the Mid-American Conference championship game at Rocket Arena. It’s only the second NCAA tournament berth in program history and the first in coach Brady Sallee’s 21-year career.
