Alabama football coach Nick Saban announced his retirement on Wednesday, ending a storied career that featured seven total national championships.
Saban will be remembered most for his exploits in the Southeastern Conference with Alabama and LSU, but it all began with his first head coaching job in 1990 at the University of Toledo.
The then-39-year old West Virginia native and Kent State alum made the move to northwest Ohio after working in defensive assistant roles for seven teams, from his alma mater to the NFL’s Houston Oilers. He led UT to a 9-2 record and a Mid-American Conference co-championship before departing after the season to become the Cleveland Browns’ defensive coordinator.
