The University of Toledo wasn’t unfamiliar to Jeff Massey before he came to campus in the summer of 2014 to interview for a vacancy on Tod Kowalczyk’s coaching staff.
In the early ‘90s, Massey starred at Owens Community College, where he’s the all-time leading scorer (1,894 points) and his No. 30 jersey is retired. He later served as Owens’ director of basketball operations, and it was the school’s legendary head coach, Jim Welling, who gave a glowing recommendation to Kowalczyk.
What Massey saw on N. Douglas Road in 2014 took him by surprise. And he knew it was an opportunity that couldn’t be passed up.
