Late free throw pushes Northern Illinois over Toledo in MAC play

University of Toledo women’s basketball allowed Northern Illinois two chances from the foul line in the waning seconds, and Alecia Doyle made good on her second try that lifted the Huskies to a 59-58 victory in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams Wednesday at Savage Arena.

Toledo (8-3, 0-1 MAC) knotted up Northern Illinois (7-5, 1-0) at 58 on a Sammi Mikonowicz (Rossford High School graduate) layup with under five seconds remaining. Doyle, however, got to the foul line on the ensuing possession, missed the front-end of the 1-and-1 but got her own rebound and was fouled again, connecting on the do-over to seal the thrilling victory.
