AKRON — The University of Akron lives by the 3 and dies by the 3.
On Tuesday night at James A. Rhodes Arena, the Zips avoided death by exploiting Toledo’s devotion to 3-point defense.
Akron torched the Rockets in transition, attacked the offensive glass, and locked down the other end of the court for an 85-78 victory.
Trailing by 12 at halftime, Akron tied the game at 48 with 13:54 left in the second half, prompting a timeout from Tod Kowalczyk, who rarely calls them, even on the road if things aren’t going well.
Whatever was discussed didn’t stick, as Akron’s run grew to 11-0, putting the Zips in front 52-48, their first lead of the night.
