On Toledo’s third play from scrimmage at Ball State, Carter Bradley launched a high-arching spiral in the direction of wide receiver Devin Maddox, who raced away from defenders for a 69-yard touchdown reception.
The quick-strike gave UT a lead it would not relinquish, but there was another play by Maddox that got Jason Candle’s attention.
“The biggest play of the game,” the Toledo coach said.
He was referring to Dequan Finn’s 70-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and, more specifically, a downfield block Maddox delivered that gave Finn a path to the end zone. It was the type of small detail that leaves coaches beaming with delight.
