DETROIT – With each team ending a long championship game drought, the Mid-American Conference championship on Saturday between the University of Toledo and Akron will also feature a rematch from the regular season for the first time since 2005.

A Toledo win over Western Michigan last Friday clinched a MAC West title and the first title game appearance since 2004, while a Nov. 21 win over Kent State gave Akron a MAC East title and its first title game appearance since 2005.

“This is a 12-month process,” UT coach Jason Candle said. “There have been a lot of team meetings, a lot of morning workouts, a lot of times where myself and the coaching staff have been able to be in front of our team and really put into perspective what we want to get accomplished.
