MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A Blue Christmas was on tap for the University of Toledo men’s basketball team.
And it had nothing to do with the school colors.
The Rockets trailed West Virginia by 18 points in the first half on Saturday, three days after suffering a humiliating 26-point home loss to Vermont. But what happened next probably shouldn’t have surprised anyone who’s witnessed a Toledo game in recent years: The Rockets clawed back with scrappy defense and an efficient offense, a hallmark of the Tod Kowalczyk era.
Now, instead of dreading the holiday season because of looming workplace issues, UT is entering the New Year with a bounce in its step despite a 91-81 setback at West Virginia.
