Briggs: Toledo's Candle is officially up against the clock

That sound you hear, Toledo fans?

It’s the sands of paradise beginning to whoosh through the hourglass.

After the Rockets’ bewildering 31-24 loss to Middle Tennessee State in the Bahamas Bowl, coach Jason Candle is officially up against the clock.

If that wasn’t clear after UT finished out of Mid-American Conference contention for the fourth straight season, it is today.

There’s no more beating around it.

With Candle entering the second-to-last year of his contract and a new athletic director coming in, the next 12 months are now-or-never time.

Friday’s game was an unacceptable end to another not-good-enough season, as a Toledo team that showed less discipline than Garfield at an Italian buffet got outclassed and outcoached.
