Briggs: Toledo football misses golden opportunity in brutal loss

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Welcome to college football.

From the heights of a signature win at Mississippi State to the top of the mountain at Western Kentucky — where the campus is perched on a hill — the Toledo football team visited here Saturday looking to keep the good times rolling.

Instead, it was reminded of the cruelest truth: What goes up must come down.

Delirium one week, despair the next.

“The highest of highs to the lowest of lows,” coach Jason Candle said after the Rockets’ late-night 26-21 loss.

With a chance to complete its first unbeaten nonconference season since 2015 — and remain squarely in the national picture — the Rockets had every opportunity in the world to snag another big win down south, leading one of their top fellow Group of Five rivals 21-10 well into the third quarter.
