Freshman nicknames, good or bad, have a tendency to stick.
University of Toledo center Nathan Boothe didn't earn his until the team settled in to watch Hot Tub Time Machine at a teammate's house during his freshman season. Former Rockets forward Reese Holliday thought “The Great White Buffalo,” a name repeated several times in the film, would be perfect for the 250-pound Boothe. Everyone laughed, including Boothe, and so, the story goes, the nickname was official.
“Somehow it caught on, then everyone started saying it, and it's stuck ever since,” Boothe said.
Well, then, consider 2015-16 the Season of the Buffalo.
