Spike Dykes figures it must’ve been 1968, when he was head coach at Big Spring, that he first crossed paths with Clovis Hale. Little did he know a job interview would yield a lifelong friendship.
“I had an offensive line job open,” Dykes recalled. “He called me, came in and visited and he said, ‘I’m not going to leave until you hire me.’ And I died laughing. He sort of laughed.
“Anyway, after about two hours, I hired him ... to get rid of him, to get him out of there.”
Dykes chuckles again at the recollection.
