Williams: Call him crazy, but Gibbs is still coaching defense

Maybe it’s because he’s 47 years old, first became a defensive coordinator at 29, grew up a coach’s son and football is all he knows.

Otherwise, David Gibbs can come across as a prime candidate to change careers.

“Coaching defense right now is insane,” says Gibbs, the latest to give it a shot at Texas Tech. “You’ve got to be a fool.”

So why slave away at coaching defense in an era when the rules favor the other side, television showcases skill-position offensive players and 14-7’s never the final score anymore? Why keep doing it?
