Wherever he wants: Johnson fills Tech need at safety, but could play anywhere

Jah’Shawn Johnson’s freshman season at Texas Tech ended after four games, so Tech coaches didn’t get a long look at him.

On top of that, Johnson played safety at Ennis High School and cornerback last season for the Red Raiders, so new defensive coordinator David Gibbs had to decide where to use him.

The answer: In the defensive backfield.

“He’s a skilled guy,” Gibbs said Monday. “He could probably play corner. He could probably play anywhere in the back end. He’s got a high football IQ. He’s active. He’s got good ball skills. We’re just looking for some safeties who can do a little bit of everything.
