The active FBS leader for career kickoff-return touchdowns didn’t return kicks in high school.
And once he got to college, the prospects didn’t look too promising either.
“I remember when I got here, there were probably like 10 guys on the depth chart,” Texas-El Paso senior Autrey Golden said. “That was a lot of guys who were skill guys. My recruiter saw something in me that I could possibly be a good returner, and it’s something that I took and ran with.”
Jeff Banks’ instincts were correct. Golden, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound senior from Willis, has six career kickoff-return TDs and barring injury should become UTEP’s career leader for kickoff-return yardage this season.
