Tulane coaches remember Katrina evacuation to Texas Tech

The catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina has been on Rick Jones’ mind in the last few weeks.

His own home did not flood in New Orleans, but his team’s home, the baseball stadium, was not as fortunate.

“We lost our stadium,” said Jones, then-coach of the Tulane baseball team.

Ten years down the road and a year into retirement, Jones said he still feels indebted to the city of Lubbock and Texas Tech, which took in his 38 baseball players and the Tulane women’s basketball team for a semester, allowing the program to continue even as Tulane was shut down for a semester.
