Trey Haverty, in the days after Texas Tech fired him, didn’t necessarily expect to hear from a coach at a rival program, let alone one offering a helping hand.
Haverty, let go two months ago as the Tech outside linebackers coach, landed the defensive coordinator’s job at Lamar in the past week. He said Baylor’s Phil Bennett, a defensive coordinator at eight schools, played an instrumental role.
The two have never worked together, having been on opposite sidelines the last five years, but Haverty said Bennett called him out of the blue to provide guidance and advice.
