The new age of college football: Why coaches are waiting longer to select their starting quarterbacks

Jimbo Fisher named Kellen Mond his starting quarterback Monday at Texas A&M, beating his old boss, Nick Saban, and Kliff Kingsbury, who apparently will reveal their quarterbacks only at the point of bayonet or kickoff, whichever comes first.

Welcome to the new age of college football, where coaches will do anything possible to keep quarterbacks from transferring.

Because the longer they wait to make a call, the less likely the chance that a quarterback leaves.

Before we get into that proposition, let me register slight surprise on Mond getting the nod over Nick Starkel. Fisher runs a pro-style offense, and Starkel, who passed for 499 yards in the Belk Bowl, seems to fit the model better than Mond.
