Justin Gray wasn’t in Ames back in 2014.
Then a freshman, Gray was in the hospital recovering from season-ending knee surgery.
He turned on the television in his room and watched as Texas Tech scored only 38 points in Hilton Coliseum as the Red Raiders ended that season 13-19.
That moment was one of the low points for that class of Tech freshmen, recruited to be the foundation of the Red Raider rebuild.
And with nowhere to go but up, that foundation became the program’s nucleus a season later as Texas Tech exceeded all expectations.
