Behind the scenes
Texas Tech brought in 18 scholarship newcomers this season, about half of whom have already played. Over the next several days, we’ll update the progress of freshmen who are redshirting and some other young players for whom Tech coaches have expectations.

Position: Defensive tackle
High school: Longview
Background: Washington played left tackle on offense last season for perennial East Texas powerhouse Longview, which went undefeated in District 15-5A and finished 9-3. He was an unheralded recruit, picking Tech over Houston and a handful of less-prominent programs.
