One way new defensive coordinator David Gibbs plans to help his Texas Tech defensive backs this year is by having them switch sides of the field less, if at all, from one play to the next.
Instead of field cornerback/boundary cornerback, strong safety/free safety, the Red Raiders typically will deploy as left corner/right corner, left safety/right safety.
By using a lot of zone coverage and having his defensive backs switch sides less, Gibbs thinks it’s reasonable to increase the team’s paltry interception numbers the last two years.
“I like it better,” safety Keenon Ward said this week.
