Utah State head coach Matt Wells is the current front-runner for Texas Tech's head coaching job, according to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal's Don Williams.
Wells just wrapped up the regular season at Utah State, leading it to a 10-2 record and its fourth season of bowl eligibility. He has a 44-34 overall record in six seasons as head coach. Texas Tech fired Kliff Kingsbury over the weekend.
The 2018 season was the first time his team appeared in the AP Top 25 poll, ranking as high as No. 14.
He still has one season left on his contract at Utah State.
