Ryan Shetter got his chance Saturday.
And the Texas Tech freshman pitcher made the most of it, throwing 5 2/3 shutout innings in his first start of the season and leading the Red Raiders to a 10-0 win over San Diego State at Rip Griffin Park.
Shetter got the start in place of Steven Gingery, who Texas Tech coach Tim Tadlock sat in order to get the fellow freshman a little extra rest.
And Shetter didn’t disappoint. The freshman had a 3.79 ERA in 11 relief appearances this season, but came on even stronger Saturday.
He pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up three hits and struck out two and lowered his ERA to 2.
