Texas Tech football coaches went out and signed a bunch of defensive backs in recent years so they wouldn’t have to rehash an old complaint: not enough bodies in the secondary.
The Red Raiders started preseason practice this week with 17 scholarship DBs, including a core group of nine juniors and sophomores who were tossed into the fire last year as underclassmen.
Now it’s up to new defensive coordinator David Gibbs, who’s spent a lifetime playing and coaching DBs, to sort through all the candidates and arrange them for maximum effect.
It’s not Gibbs’ nature to overstate his hand.
