J.J. Gaines’ recent medical history, a dossier that includes season-ending shoulder injuries two years in a row, presents a concern and a challenge, Texas Tech defensive coordinator David Gibbs admitted Tuesday.
“It doesn’t do me any good to put him in there at safety and let him play 60 plays and play two games and hurt himself again,” Gibbs said, “so I’ve got to be smart with how I use him.”
Gibbs said he’ll have Gaines “do a little bit of everything.” That might include playing some cornerback, nickel and dime as well as his usual safety spot.
