Clovis Hale, a longtime coaching associate of Spike Dykes who served two stints as Texas Tech offensive line coach, died Saturday afternoon in a one-vehicle accident near Spicewood. He was 74.
Hale was on the Tech staff from 1984-86 and again from 1997-99.
“Just really a shame,” said Carlos Mainord, another longtime former Tech assistant. “I really hated it. Such a great guy. He’s one of the most genuine people that I’ve ever been around.”
The Austin American-Statesman reported that Hale was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe east on Texas 71 about one mile east of Spicewood when he went off the right shoulder of the road, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
