The day before Texas Tech started preseason practice, David Gibbs said he likes coaching defense because of the challenge, one that can seem even bigger at Tech than most places.
“Can we be any worse?” he asked.
He learned Saturday that one never knows if the Red Raiders’ sagging defense, like a stock-market plunge, has found a bottom. Tech’s wasn’t the worst defense anyone’s ever played against Sam Houston State, but it was close. The Bearkats’ 671 yards total offense was their third-best mark all-time.
“Obviously, we didn’t play very good,” the Red Raiders’ new defensive coordinator said Monday.
