Don Williams of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported that Texas Tech is in negotiations with Matt Wells to make him the Red Raiders' next head coach, replacing the fired Kliff Kingsbury.

In his first year as head coach at Utah State, Wells had a tough act to follow. In the season prior to Wells taking over, then head coach Gary Andersen led Utah State to an 11-2 record, a ranking as high as No. 16 in the AP Top 25 and a win over Toledo in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
