Ariel Ortiz Named Sun Belt Player of the Week

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Texas State's Ariel Ortiz was selected as the Sun Belt Conference Community Coffee Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.

The junior shortstop from Waxahachie, Texas, helped lead the Texas State softball team to a 3-0 record this past week, which included a 2-0 record against Coastal Carolina to start Sun Belt play.

Ariel Ortiz went a combined 7-for-11 in Texas State's three games last week, including two wins at Coastal Carolina, which entered the series on a 12-game win streak and receiving a top-25 vote … Of Ortiz's seven hits, six went for extra bases (3 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR) … She opened the week a 3-for-4 with four RBI, a HR, 2B and 3B in the 11-2 win over Incarnate Word … In the series opener at Coastal Carolina, Ortiz was 3-for-3 with two 2B and an RBI on a sac fly … In the second game of the DH against the Chanticleers, the junior was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer to left … Ortiz, who now co-leads TXST with seven home runs, slugged 1.
