HOUSTON -- It ended up being a, um, call to arms.
The Rangers finished off the three-day amateur draft Wednesday by taking 23 pitchers among their final picks in the 40-round draft. In all, the Rangers took 29 pitchers and just 12 position players.
The Rangers have put added emphasis on developing pitching in the last year, but they also have a system deep in young position players, which allowed them to spend more on pitching. Scouting director Kip Fagg said the team didn't need to draft as many roster-filler position players.
"It was a tough draft to get bats, but there were a lot of good arms," scouting director Kipp Fagg said.
