SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Tony Beasley on Saturday resumed his calling as a third-base coach, taking his spot for the 7-5 loss to Kansas City in the exhibition opener.

The Rangers believe that alone makes them an improved team.

On the emotional level, Beasley brings a joyful presence to the club. On the pragmatic level, Beasley is at the top of his field.

"You get an elite third-base coach, your base-running is better," manager Jeff Banister.

Beasley stayed off the field last season while undergoing treatment for rectal cancer. He was around the club, offering advice and encouragement, but the Rangers missed him in the coach's box.
