SURPRISE, Ariz. - Shiraz Rehman began his career as one of The Smartest Guys in The Room. Then he became "redundant."
And, with that, a path to a career in baseball opened up.
Rehman, 41, is the Rangers' newest assistant general manager. At some point, he may very well end up losing the "assistant" element of the title with Jon Daniels moving into the president's chair. For now, he will oversee the Rangers' salary arbitration cases and contract negotiations, take an active hand in expanding the research and development/analytics department and handle some of the day-to-day front office duties.
