Wednesday afternoon it was announced that Jeffrey Springs had be designated for assignment as one of the moves to open up 40-man roster spots for new signings, Robinson Chirinos and Todd Frazier. Not long after though, the Texas Rangers announced that the lefty Springs had been traded to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for 1B/OF Sam Travis.
Springs had a bit of a strange offseason regarding roster moves having been already been DFA’d prior to this instance. By trading him to the Red Sox, the Rangers avoid losing him for nothing on waivers and maintains the open spot on the 40-man roster needed to officially make yesterday’s signings.
