Left-handed reliever Will Smith and the Kansas City Royals are in agreement on a one-year, $5 million contract, sources told ESPN on Sunday, reuniting the veteran and the team with which he made his major league debut more than a decade ago.
Smith, 34, could serve as the Royals' closer, a job he has held at various points in his 11-year big league career. He saved 22 games for the World Series champion Texas Rangers this year -- the third consecutive season in which he won a title after pitching in the bullpens of Houston in 2022 and Atlanta in 2021.
