It appears the Rangers are ready to move on from Derek Holland, save some money and reallocate their resources elsewhere.
According to a source, the club is proactively making phone calls to gauge a market for the 30-year-old left-hander before it commits to picking up his 2017 club option worth $11 million. FanRag.com's Jon Heyman first reported the Rangers attempt to get the market going.
The Rangers must make a decision on Holland's option shortly after the World Series. If they decline the option, they would be responsible for a $1.5 million buyout. If they pick up the option and deal him, even if for a fringe prospect, they might be able to save the full $11 million, which is money that could be allocated for other starting pitching, a center fielder or first baseman.
