ARLINGTON -- The Rangers will honor one of the most cherished teams on Tuesday night. The 1996 Rangers, the first playoff team in club history, will be honored before Tuesday's game with the Reds.
The Rangers went 90-72 that season under their late manager Johnny Oates to capture the American League West title. After four tight games, they lost to the Yankees in the AL Division Series.
Juan Gonzalez won the AL Most Valuable Player Award that year, while catcher Ivan Rodriguez and pitcher Roger Pavlik were named to the All-Star team. But that season, the Rangers were defined more by their character and personality than their talent on the field.
