If there has been a theme to the Rangers' philosophy on pitching acquisitions this winter, it's been about prospects or projects.
Right-hander David Carpenter, who agreed to a minor league contract this week with the team, definitely fits into the latter category. Also, he shouldn't be confused with the "other" David Carpenter, who attended South Grand Prairie High School and pitched at about the same time.
This David Carpenter, 33, hasn't pitched in the majors since 2015 due to shoulder issues. The Rangers are his fifth organization since the Atlanta Braves traded him to the New York Yankees after the 2014 season.
