OAKLAND, Calif. - Drew Smyly becomes the second member of the Rangers' trio of Tommy John-comeback pitchers to head to the Injured List in the season's first month.
Smyly has left mid-arm nerve tightness, according to Rangers officials. He complained of the issue after his start against Houston on Friday. Smyly, who turns 30 in June, missed the last two seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
The Rangers are recalling right-hander Wei-Chieh Huang from Double-A Frisco to replace Smyly on the roster, but the team will use a bullpen arm to start Wednesday's game against Oakland, which had been Smyly's scheduled day.
