Ahead of Thursday's series opener in Boston, the Rangers recalled left-hander Yohander Mendez -- the club's No. 7 prospect, per MLB Pipeline -- from Triple-A Round Rock and optioned right-hander Nick Gardewine to Round Rock a day after he tossed two scoreless innings against the Indians.
With no injuries in the Rangers' rotation, Mendez could initially fill a long-relief role -- particularly with the club in need of a fresh arm after left-hander Matt Moore went just four innings in Thursday's 12-4 loss in Cleveland.
The 23-year-old Mendez began the year with Round Rock, going 0-3 with a 6.
