ARLINGTON -- The Rangers optioned center fielder Delino DeShields to Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday and recalled left-handed pitcher Brandon Mann.
The move gives the Rangers an eight-man bullpen again, but the surprise is that DeShields was sent to Triple-A to work out of his slump. He has been playing superb defensive center field, but he has just three hits in his last 37 at-bats, dropping his batting average from .232 to .204.
Carlos Tocci, the Rule 5 Draft pick from the Phillies, will start in center field for the Rangers against the A's on Tuesday.
