ARLINGTON -- The Seattle Mariners, like most of the Rangers' opponents so far this season, dared Joey Gallo to bunt by leaving the left side of the infield unattended.
So, Gallo, on Sunday, tried to appease them by bunting, but his bunt attempt rolled foul.
The next pitch hit him.
While it seems unlikely that reliever James Pazos was taking umbrage over the bunt attempt, the question of "etiquette" in the current era of extreme shifts seems worth asking about. Can a team try to overshift one side of the field and still be insulted if a player tries to exploit what is being left available to him?
