BOSTON -- The Rangers and the Royals have agreed to a seven-year contract extension with the city of Surprise, Ariz., in exchange for approximately $21.9 million of improvements in the Spring Training facility they have shared since 2003.
The deal was approved by the Surprise city council on Tuesday. The funds will be split evenly between the two teams. The Rangers are expected to use their share for major renovations to their clubhouse, including the weight and training room, as well as add a multipurpose conference room and media center.
The Rangers and Royals had an agreement with Surprise to remain at the 132-acre site through 2022.
