Rangers do not protect heralded prospect Beras, add high-school teammate of Joey Gallo

With a deadline fast approaching, the Texas Rangers on Friday added two players to the 40-man major-league roster.

The club promoted first baseman Ronald Guzman and added right-hander Tyler Wagner from Arizona on a $20,000 waiver claim. Wagner played with Rangers minor-league slugger Joey Gallo at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nev.

Wagner, 25, had three starts with Milwaukee in 2015 and three relief appearances with the Diamondbacks. Guzman, 22, hit .274 with 16 homers, 67 RBIs and a .782 OPS at the Double- and Triple-A levels last season.

With the move, Guzman and Wagner are protected from the Rule V draft next month at the winter meetings.
