SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Veteran right-hander Jesse Chavez helped his chances of being on the Texas Rangers' opening day roster by working three perfect innings during a 5-1 win against Kansas City on Monday night.
Chavez needed only 29 pitches, 22 for strikes.
"He should be very pleased with himself," manager Jeff Banister said.
The outing represented improvement over Chavez' previous two appearances. He allowed 10 base-runners and four runs in 4 2/3 innings in those games.
Chavez could not afford a third consecutive sub-par performance. He is a 10-year veteran but is in camp on a non-guaranteed contract.
