Mel Stottlemyre, longtime MLB pitcher and pitching coach with the New York Yankees, has died at the age of 77.
Stottlemyre spent 11 years pitching in the majors for the New York Yankees from 1964-74, putting up a 2.97 ERA and 40.8 bWAR in 356 starts and 4 relief appearances, logging a 164-139 career record. He then spent 22 years as a major league pitching coach with the New York Mets, the Houston Astros, and the New York Yankees.
Stottlemyre’s son Todd had a fourteen year major league career with five teams, including the Texas Rangers, who traded Fernando Tatis for Stottlemyre and Royce Clayton in July, 1998.
