Javier, Urquidy need elbow surgery

The Houston Astros, who are close at the heels of the Texas Rangers in the race for second place in the American League West, will be without starting pitchers Cristian Javier and Jose Urquidy for the rest of the season, the team announced today.

Each is having elbow surgery this week — Urquidy today, Javier tomorrow — and while it is not yet known if they will require Tommy John surgery or elbow brace surgery, either way, they will be out for the remainder of 2024. Tommy John surgery would mean they would most likely be out until after the 2025 All Star Break, while the elbow brace surgery would potentially have a return date of earlier in 2025.
