The Seattle Mariners have claimed pitcher Jonathan Hernandez on waivers, it was announced last night. Hernandez was designated for assignment on July 31 to make room on the 40 man roster for Andrew Chafin, whom the Rangers acquired from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for Joseph Montalvo and Chase Lee.
The 28 year old Hernandez was signed by the Rangers as an international free agent all the way back in 2013. As a minor leaguer he showed really good stuff but problematic command, though he had more success once he converted to relieving. After a strong year in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Hernandez missed all of 2021 and much of 2022 due to Tommy John surgery.
