DETROIT -- Right-hander A.J. Griffin exited Saturday's game vs. the Tigers in the third inning after experiencing stiffness in his right shoulder. Right-hander Anthony Ranaudo replaced him on the mound.
Griffin had fallen behind several batters in the third and walked two to load the bases. Eight of his last 11 pitches were outside the strike zone, and the command he had exhibited earlier in the game had eroded.
A first-pitch slider to Nick Castellanos dropped for a two-run single, and after one pitch to Jarrod Saltalamacchia, catcher Bryan Holaday noticed something wrong with his starter.
