Wayne Terwilliger, former major league second baseman and long time major league coach and minor league manager, died today in Weatherford, Texas. He was 95.
Terwilliger logged 666 major league games over 9 different seasons from 1949 through 1960. He became a manager in the Washington Senators system in 1963, and managed various Senators farm teams until 1969, when he became the third base coach for the Senators. Terwilliger came to Texas when the Senators became the Rangers in 1972, though he was replaced after Ted Williams, the team’s manager, retired and was replaced by Whitey Herzog.
Terwilliger managed in the minors for various organizations, including the Rangers, throughout the 1970s, and was back on the Rangers major league coaching staff in 1981, where he remained through the 1985 season.
