Fielder, 32, had surgery for a C4/C5 herniation in his neck, ending his season. He also underwent a similar procedure in 2014.

The six-time All-Star is a career .283/.382/.506 hitter with 319 home runs and 1,028 RBIs with the Brewers, Tigers and Rangers. His father, Cecil Fielder, who played from 1985-88 and 1990-98, also hit 319 big league homers.

He is owed $20 million annually through 2020. It is not known if Texas has insurance on Fielder's contract, according to Rosenthal.
